Testimonials

“I have learned so much from the vocabulary seminar that it is hard to know how an whereto begin
describing the activities I will implement in my classroom. One of the most significant things I have learned is the importance of vocabulary instruction using The Rule of 3 as described by Dr. Ventriglia in her Best Practices series of books.”

- Middle school teacher

The Best Practice teaching strategies that I learned will help my students. Applying The Rule of 3 helps both high achieving and low students. If the teacher’s goal is to narrow the gap between English learners and high performing students in the classroom, then vocabulary development is critical across subject areas.”

- Lucinda Mok ELL specialist, 3rd grade teacher

“I have grown leaps and bounds as a teacher by implementing the strategies in the Best Practice in teaching series. Applying the strategies has increased my students’ test scores. My students are engaged in lessons and holding onto knowledge longer. My students are working cooperatively and are motivated to learn.”

- Sean Howland, 8th grade teacher

“I have implemented the Vocabulary strategies using the Rule of Three daily with my students including my English language learners. The strategies work! My class won a regional spelling contest this year and all scored at proficient and advanced levels on end of the year tests.”

- John Garcia 6th grade teacher

Using the Stoplight Comprehension Passages have particularly helped my students with expository reading. My English learners have greatly benefited from the Stoplight strategies and the short narrative and expository selections that “chunk down” information in comprehensible pieces.”

-Mary Bennett, 4th grade teacher

“My school went up 133 points and we earned the Governor’s award of $10,000 for each of our teachers using these Benchmark Assessments and Best Practice Teaching Strategies.”

- Harriet Young, Principal

These are comparisons between Best Practice and Matched Schools. Best Practice schools show dramatic gains.
An Education Extra in the Sacramento Bee stated:

With the API scores just released, four of Sacramento City Schools boasted tremendous gains this year thanks to innovative strategies offered by the Center for Research Teaching Excellence (CRTE) and its Harvard-educated director. All four beat their targeted growth area in the API index scores just released. Bear Flag Elementary (55% African American) posted the fifth highest gains in the Sacramento region and scored highest with its API went up 119 points to 670. Their growth target was 12. Susan B. Anthony (85% ELLs Hmong and Spanish) test scores rose 71 points (target 17). If you look closely at these schools, these gains in the schools API scores are even greater due to the large numbers of ELLs and these schools have 100% of their students on free lunches.

The CTA Educator a magazine published by the California Teachers Association stated in an article: Sacramento teachers are singing the praises of a program in which they consider themselves lucky to be able to teach and learn from. “It has greatly helped the ELLs in my class,” says Sao Vue. It has helped me to focus on strategies like the Rule of 3. I like the coaching.”…. Scores have gone up dramatically, but the program has done more than boost scores. Teachers say it has given them strategies, direction, motivation and constant feedback on their progress.
